A guard booth can be any kind of enclosure in which professionals in security and defense can oversee what comes and goes. A guard booth can also be referred to as a guard shack, guard hut, guard house, security booth, security shack, or security hut. Guard booths and guard shacks are designed to keep personnel protected from incoming threats. They can also be designed as permanent structures for long term protection or portable structures that can be moved from location to location.

There are many ways that a guard booth can be customized and configured. Determining how your guard booth should operate functionally and figuring out exactly what specific features you need for your facility is very important when it comes to maintaining a safe and secure environment. The size, layout, environmental features, surveillance features, ballistic or blast protection, and weapons ports are all things to consider when discussing the required modifications to be made for your guard booth.

Size and Layout

The Size and Layout of a guard booth are among the most common features that you should consider having customized. The typical sizes of a guard booth range between 4 x 6 to 10 x 12. For your facility, a smaller unit could be more appropriate for 1 or 2 individuals to occupy, or you may need a much larger unit made for a group.

The layout can be customized to provide different modes of evacuation including stairs and doorways. You can also modify your layout to add lift connections to your guard booth for easy set up or relocation. You may even want to enhance the appearance and design of your guard booth to compliment the existing architecture of your facility or just to remain compliant with local building codes.

Environmental Features

There are many modifications you can make based on the environment your guard booth will be placed in. It is important that your guard booth has appropriate HVAC units for the typical (more or less) weather conditions of the required location. You may require custom roofing to ensure that your guard shack is more weatherproof and less likely to have water damage or accumulated condensation.

You may also need customized windows to be shatter resistant, protective of sun rays, or heat reducing. Custom lighting can increase the visibility of where the guard booth is located if someone needs to quickly find security. Increased mobility would also be important as your defensive strategy evolves possibly requiring your guard booth to be moved.

Surveillance Features

Customizing the surveillance features can give you more control of the entry and exit points of your facility. Your booth could be elevated as high as 50 feet for a higher security position. Once again, custom lighting can be a huge factor here from a visual standpoint as well as customized windows for 360-degree visibility.

You may also want to configure your guard booth so that it is tailored to the security system you have in place. Post and pre-installed cameras are among other types of modifications made to enhance surveillance capabilities. Electrical outlets and wiring for equipment can also be customized for more efficiency throughout your day-to-day operations.

Weapons Ports/Ballistic or Blast Protection

You can increase protection by adding a ballistic rated weapon firing access port to your guard booth. Weapons ports can also be given the ability to slide to the left or right for more flexibility in fields of fire. In the future, you may want to take the weapons port out of your guard booth and switch with one that better suits your defensive strategy. A weapons port can also be modified to be weather resistant preventing the intrusion of water, wind and debris.

Ballistic glass can be added to each window to help view and engage targets with more protection. Windows can be sliding, reach through, or solid. Installing new ballistic glass into existing windows or weapons ports of your guard booth is also an option and a variety of window tint options are available, to include one-way mirror tinting. You should also consider the importance of the UL 752 and NIJ levels of protection as you can modify your guard booth to have your required level of ballistic and blast resistance.
