Preventing Crime with Target Hardening

What exactly is target hardening?

Target hardening is an effective form of crime prevention where a building or structure is designed to deter criminals. In a number of cases, the building is made to look less attractive, or more stringent security measures are implemented.

When you see security or screening systems that require identification cards and passwords to gain entry, this is a perfect example of an initial target hardening measure, and a secondary mesasure once someone enters the building. Companies employ multiple target hardening solutions to not only protect their structures, but also the employees that work for them. Most people consider this security protocols, but they fall in line under the target hardening definition.

Target Hardening Measures

There are a number of effective target hardening measures that work to reduce crime prevention and make it harder for an intruder to gain access. A few target hardening techniques include:

  • Upgrading locks on doors, windows and external structures
  • Using encrypted passwords on machines and software
  • Jamming windows and doors with impenetrable devices

Stricter measures can be taken depending on the structure or facility. This includes adding guard stations for commercial offices; having concrete tables and benches; using alternative air intakes; installing an early warning system, and other tactics.

Target Hardening Your Home

There are certain steps you can take when target hardening your home. A few target hardening examples include installing an alarm; keeping valuables out of view from the windows; placing your vehicle in a garage; locking doors and windows; installing fencing, walls, hedges or other boundary treatments; establishing a crime watch patrol in your neighborhood.

While target hardening can seem complicated, any solution where it helps keep outsiders from entering your space is a form of target hardening. It can be as simple as setting an automatic timer for your lights, installing perimeter lighting, keeping your outside lights on after dark, and keeping your shrubbery and trees well maintained. When used correctly, these products and tactics work well in deterring criminals or hackers.
